Fat Transfer to Breast

(Hitting two birds with one stone!)

Fat transfer to the breast (fat grafting) is a type of breast augmentation procedure that is meant to increase breast volume without the use of artificial implants. Fat transfer to breast surgery is a two-part procedure, which utilizes liposuction and fat tissue injection. This procedure is an excellent option for women who are looking for a relatively small increase in breast size while improving natural breast shape. A fat transfer surgery is an alternative for breast enhancement without the use of traditional implants.

Fat transfer is also known as fat grafting. The beauty of this procedure is that it offers the opportunity to enhance the breasts and eliminate unwanted fat from other areas at the same time. The fat is grafted from the patient’s own body, which eliminates the risk of rejection of artificial structures in the body.

First, liposuction is performed to extract fat from the patient’s abdomen, thighs, buttocks and/or flank. Once the fat is extracted, it is injected into the breasts, creating increased volume and giving a naturally beautiful shape. A fat transfer procedure can also correct for breast asymmetry.

Benefits of a fat transfer breast augmentation include:

  1. Shaping and sculpting the breasts

  2. Minimal incisions

  3. Minimal scarring

  4. Eliminating unwanted fat from the midsection and lower body

  5. Eliminating the risk of implant leakage or rupture

  6. Eliminating the risk of scar tissue formation around the implant, leading to capsular contracture

  7. Less trauma to the body as compared to traditional breast augmentation

  8. Reduced recovery time as compared to traditional augmentation

      9. Fat transfers are natural and provide long-lasting results

Candidates for Fat Transfer to Breast

Women who are good candidates for this surgery are those who are looking for subtle breast enhancement and would like to reduce unwanted fat in other areas of the body. Women who want a more drastic increase in breast size will not be satisfied with the breast enhancement from a fat transfer procedure. It is also important that women have enough body fat available to sufficiently augment the breasts. Many patients choose to have this procedure after having unsatisfactory results from an implant procedure, or in combination with a breast lift.

Fat Transfer Procedure

Fat transfer breast augmentation is performed with two surgical procedures on the same day. The first procedure is to harvest the fat from another area of the body, typically from the abdomen, buttocks, flank and/or thighs. The fat is extracted using liposuction. First, a small incision is placed in the area to harvest the fat. A small cannula is inserted and fat tissue is removed using a vacuum suction. The liposuction sites are sculpted to give the patient smooth and beautiful contours. Once the fat is collected, prepared for injection into the breasts by removing any blood, oil, fluid waste or contaminants. Then, the clean fat is placed in a syringe for injection into the breast.

Injection of the Fat into the Breast

The second procedure is the injection of harvested fat tissue into the breasts. The fat is strategically and methodically injected into the breasts by the surgeon. It is injected in a small thread-like manner to promote integration into the breast tissues. The fat is injected into all levels of the breast, with a focus under the skin and above the chest muscle.

Fat Transfer with Augmentation or Lift

Fat transfer can be combined with other surgical procedures, such as traditional augmentation and breast lift procedures. Fat transfer with augmentation is typically indicated for complex conditions involving breast shape. For some situations, fat grafting will provide needed volume in a way that an implant alone is unable to. A breast lift will improve the shape, correcting for breast sagging and excess skin. When combining a fat transfer to a breast lift, the patient can increase volume, while correcting for breast shape.

What to Expect with Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

The entire procedure takes 4-6 hours for harvesting and injection. Patients are typically able to return to light activities and work in one week. Strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for several weeks. After a fat transfer to breast procedure, the patient should expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort at the fat donor sites and the injection sites. This discomfort is easily controlled and are only temporary.

For some patients, 1-3 fat transfers must be performed in order to achieve the desired outcomes. This is because some of the injected fat may be absorbed by the body and not give the desired results during the initial procedure. Typically, breasts keep 60-80% of transferred fat volume. It is important that patients follow post-surgical instructions from the surgeon in order to allow the breasts to heal properly. This will increase the amount of fat that is retained in the breasts.

With fat grafting, the breast shape is improved, enhancing the cleavage of the upper breasts. The size is usually increased by 1 full bra cup size. It is important that women have realistic expectations for surgery. If looking for a more dramatic increase in breast volume, a traditional breast augmentation with implants will be better indicated. The results of the fat transfer are long term, usually for several years. However, breast changes can occur with natural ageing, gravity, and weight changes.

Fat transfer to breast is a newly emerging and growing cosmetic procedure. One consideration is the impact of fat injection into the breasts and how it affects breast health. Just like any other breast procedures, when the fat is injected into the breast, lumps, cysts and calcifications may form. The typical adverse event is formation of fatty cysts within the breasts, which can be suspicious for breast cancer upon imaging. However, most cysts are easily aspirated during a simple office procedure.

Additionally, the grafted fat looks different and is distinguishable from lesions associated with breast cancer. It is important to have regular breast examinations, noting any changes to imaging studies. Research has found no increase in breast cancer prevalence in individuals who have undergone fat grafting. The concern arises in the ability to properly visualize any unrelated lesions. In actuality, the adverse effects of this procedure are low, as the body does not reject its own fat cells.

The most common complaint after this procedure is insufficient fat uptake, if not enough fat survives the transplant. This results in inadequate volume. Unfortunately, the unpredictability of fat grafting makes it difficult to determine exactly how much fat with taking and what breast volume can be expected. With multiple grafts, more volume and more dramatic results can be obtained.

Brazilian Butt Lift

(Fat transfer to buttocks)

The Brazilian Butt Lift refines the entire “S”-shaped curve of your profile. The procedure begins with liposuction, as excess fat is removed from selected areas of the hips, thighs, back and abdomen. This suctioned fat is then purified before being transferred to the upper buttocks in small amounts that are strategically injected at varying depths to form an enhanced, but very natural, new curve. The Brazilian Butt Lift is beneficial for several reasons, including the following:

The areas that are liposuctioned are often “problem areas” (i.e., the flanks, thighs, lower back and abdomen) that are hard to reduce with diet and exercise. By removing fat from these body parts, the area around the buttocks looks smaller and leaner. The surgeon tends to extract more fat than is needed to augment the buttocks because not all of the fat will survive the transplantation. Because the area around the buttocks looks smaller, the butt itself becomes more noticeable. The liposuctioned fat is injected into the upper quadrant of the buttocks, so it looks lifted in all the right places. The result is a beautiful “S”-shaped curve. Using the patient’s fat decreases the risk of infection or adverse reaction. The procedure is a combination of plastic surgery treatments but requires only one surgical recovery with a short downtime.

Your complete and speedy recovery requires that several specific instructions be followed, including certain positions for rest and sleep, bathing techniques, and mild exercises. Be sure to ask your surgeon about any concerns or questions you have about the recovery process. At South Florida Center, we believe your health and happiness are the most important considerations at any time.

Possible Complications

Complications are possible with any surgical procedure, including the Brazilian Butt Lift. It is important to enter into any procedure aware of the possible complications as well as the benefits.

The most common risk associated with this procedure is the possible absorption of the transferred fat in the weeks following surgery. While not dangerous, this occurrence would require a second insertion of fat into the buttocks. A second procedure gets satisfactory results in nearly all cases.

A recurrence of droopiness is possible, especially in overweight patients or those with an extreme excess of skin. Asymmetry, in which one side of the buttocks looks different than the other side, is also possible. However, this result is most likely in patients with significant asymmetry before surgery. A second procedure can usually achieve just the right balance.

Rare complications include excessive bleeding or infection, wound healing problems, prolonged fluid drainage, changes in skin sensation, blood clotting or scaring. These challenges are nearly always correctable and short term.

Good communication between doctor and patient is always important. We encourage you to talk to our cosmetic surgeons about all of your questions and concerns.

Some women are born with a small, flat or boxy rear end. Others experience sagging as they age. Now every woman can have a gorgeous new backside by undergoing Brazilian butt lift in Ft. Lauderdale.

Recovery

When you awaken after your Brazilian butt lift, you will experience some discomfort for a few hours after the anesthesia wears off. Your surgeon will give you medication to keep you as comfortable as possible. Swelling and bruising at butts is little and won't last long.

It is important to avoid the sitting position for too long and sleep on your sides or ur stomach as often as possible during the first two weeks to decrease fat resorption. You will wear a special garment to reduce swelling for about two weeks. Cold compresses can further reduce swelling and ease any discomfort.

Patients whose jobs do not involve full-time sitting usually return to work in just a few days. Other patients wait up to two weeks.

One month after your procedure swelling will have reduced substantially and you may resume your regular exercise routine.

Frequent Questions

Below you will find a list of frequent questions about Brazilian Butt Lifts. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, please write to us, be sure to include the procedure name and your question!

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

Operating time for the Brazilian Butt Lift is about 3 hours.

HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RETURN TO MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES?

Some activities may be resumed in a matter of days, such as returning to a job that does not require constant sitting. Strenuous activities, such as your usual exercise regime, must wait three or four weeks. Your doctor will follow your progress closely and advise you as to which activities are safe during your healing process.

HOW IS THE BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT DONE?

Excess fat is removed from selected areas of the hips, thighs, back and abdomen. This fat is purified before becoming the “donor” fat that is injected into the upper buttocks. The fat is placed at varying depths to ensure the very highest absorption rate. The result is a fuller, more voluptuous and prominent backside.

IS THE BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT THE ONLY WAY TO AUGMENT MY BUTT?

There are two ways to enhance your buttocks: the Brazilian Butt Lift or traditional butt implants. The Brazilian technique carries a lower risk of infection than implants and also tends to achieve a more natural look. And, because the areas receiving liposuction during a Brazilian style lift are made leaner, a patient’s entire profile gains a sensuous new contour.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?

During your initial preoperative visit with your surgeon, we will need your complete medical history, including all of your medications, allergies and previous surgeries. You will undergo a through physical examination and blood tests. Feel free to talk to your doctor about the exact look you are hoping to achieve and any questions you have about your procedure.

WHAT FORM OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?

I prefer using IV sedation plus tumescent technique for fat transfer to breasts or buttocks.
